Este é o resumo da comunicação: "Technological innovation may be the single most distinguishing feature of the international medical industry. New technology accounts for some of the most spectacular improvements in health outcomes for populations around the world, as well as for the lion’s share of growth in expenditures. This presentation identifies a sample of cutting edge technologies that appear to have particular promise for improving patient care. The role of medical innovation in inducing, responding to, and mediating social change in health care systems in particular and society in general will be discussed, as well as the societal costs and benefits of medical breakthroughs. Sample innovations to be highlighted include robotic surgery; some applications on the frontiers of nanotechnology; RNA interference and other biotechnologies; remote monitoring of the elderly and the smart house; hybrid clinical/electronic therapies; new telemedicine applications; and the digital hospital."
